Wheaton
is an urbanized community in located north of Washington, DC in
Montgomery
County, MD. The Wheaton area has a population of 57,694 people.
Wheaton is named after its founder,
General Frank Wheaton. General Wheaton was born in 1833 and died in 1903 after a long, successful life. He served distinguishably in the
Civil War, as well as on the American frontier. His success allowed him to rise through the ranks, ultimately achieving the rank of major general in 1897.
Wheaton is located in Maryland and is only a short drive away from Washington, DC. Downtown Wheaton is centered around the intersections of Maryland Route 586 (Veirs Mill Road), Maryland Route 193 (University Boulevard), and Maryland Route 97 (Georgia Avenue). Wheaton is also located on the red line of the
Washington Metro, and the
Wheaton station is home to the longest set of single-span escalators in the Western Hemisphere. They are
508 feet in length and a ride on them takes
more than three
minutes.
The Wheaton community also has several desirable attractions. There is the
Wheaton Regional Park
located at 9500 Brunett Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20901, which offers a variety of features. The Park has a nature center, riding stables, a dog park, a picnic area, a carousel and a miniature train. There is also an athletic complex, consisting of a tennis bubble, an ice rink, an in-line skating rink, and ball fields.

Westfield Shoppingtown Wheaton, a shopping center formerly known as Wheaton Plaza located at • 11160 Veirs Mill Road, Wheaton MD 20902-1094 . Besides these obvious attractions, Wheaton is also home to various ethnic restaurants that mirror the community’s diverse population.
