Takoma Park
is a community located in
Montgomery

Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as a planned commuter suburb. For much of its existence Takoma Park was the world headquarters of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church
located at 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904. Takoma Park was also split between Montgomery County and
Prince George’s County
up until 1997, when a referendum was passed that moved the county lines so all of Takoma Park was in Montgomery County. In addition, there is a section of Takoma Park that is in Washington, DC, and while it is politically separate from Takoma Park, Maryland, the two communities share much of the same history and culture.
Takoma Park has a reputation as a very liberal, progressive city. It is known as Azalea City and has also been labeled an official “Tree City, USA.” It is also a nuclear-free zone, and has an award-winning recycling program. The city also allows residents who are not United States citizens to vote in local elections and hold local elected office. The city has also taken great steps to preserve its historic character.
