Springfield, Virginia
is a lovely community located in
Fairfax
County, Virginia
and was founded in 1847 as a station of the
Orange and Alexandria Railroad. Today Springfield has a population of 30,417 and consists of the smaller communities of
Springfield, West Springfield, North Springfield, and
Newington.
Springfield covers an area of 9.8 square miles. The median household income is $69,640 and 5.1% of the population lives below the poverty line.
Springfield is mainly a residential community, although its convenient location to I-95, I-395, and the
Capital Beltway (I-495)
has allowed a commercial district to crop up. Springfield is also located at the intersection of Route 644 (Old Keene Mill Road / Franconia Road) and Route 617 (Backlick Road), allowing for easy travel around the area. The
Springfield Interchange
highway project finished in 2007 and is now one of the busiest interchanges in the United States with more than 430,000 cars a day traveling along its path.
In fact, it was the creation of another roadway, the
Henry Shirley Highway, now known as I-95/I-395, that spurned much of Springfield’s initial growth. Springfield’s proximity to Washington, DC continued to benefit its growth as the opening of the
Springfield Mall
in the mid-1970s made Springfield a popular retail destination. Springfield became such a booming community that the
Franconia-Springfield Parkway
was expanded in 1996 and the
Franconia-Springfield Metro Station
and
Virginia Rail Express Station
were opened in 1997, allowing greater access to and from Washington, DC.
Springfield is still a growing community today with plans to renovate the Springfield Mall to allow for more shopping, office, and residential space while also creating a thriving
town
center.
The Fairfax County General District Court is located at 4110 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030.
