Reston
is the most populated city in Fairfax County with a population of approximately 60,353. The total land area is 17.4 square miles. Reston was created as a planned community by Robert E. Simon and was founded on April 20, 1964. It was the first modern post-war planned community in America created from funds after Simon sold
Carnegie Hall. It is also the first community to use clustered townhouse development which allows preservation of open space amongst higher density populations along with the first private community to incorporate natural preservation in its planning. The first section of the community built was
Lake Anne Plaza
where you can find free summer music concerts, a
farmer’s market, and free children’s entertainment.
Reston lays claim to being one of the few United States communities not designated for single homes known as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat.
Backyard Wildlife Habitats
is a program of the
National Wildlife Federation
