Prince George’s County
is a county in the state of Maryland and borders Washington, DC on the north, east, and south. It has a population of 828,770 and is the wealthiest county in the United States with an African-American majority.
Prince George’s County
covers 498 square miles, with 13 square miles of that being water. The median household income is $55,256 and 7.70% of the population lives below the property line.
Prince George’s County was founded in 1696. In 1791 a portion of Prince George’s County was ceded to form part of Washington, DC, and the county’s borders remained unchanged for more than 200 years, when in 1997 a portion of Takoma Park, Maryland was transferred from Prince George’s County to
Montgomery County.
Many major roadways run through Prince George’s County, and the county is also home to many other forms of transportation, including railways and an airport. The Capital Beltway (I-495) runs through Prince George’s County, as do I-95, US Route 1, US Route 50, US Route 301, and many Maryland routes. The
Washington Metro
also has four station stops in Prince George’s County, and the
Maryland Area Rail Commuter
system has two lines and nine stops in the county.
