Gaithersburg
is a large city located in
Montgomery
County, Maryland. It has a population of 57,698, making it the fourth largest city in
Maryland.
The city covers 10.2 square miles of land. The median household income is $59,879 with 7.1% of the population living below the poverty line.
Gaithersburg was founded in 1765 and was a small town for much of its youth. In 1873 that changed when the
Baltimore & Ohio Railroad
constructed a station in Gaithersburg, which led to rapid growth. In 1899 Gaithersburg was one of 6 locations in the world selected to host an
International Latitude Observatory. This
Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory
used to measure the wobble of the Earth on its polar axis and remained in operation until 1982. Scientists continue to use data gathered from this observatory and is the only
National Historic Landmark
in Gaithersburg.
Gaithersburg is easily accessed through the many modes of transportation available in the area. Maryland State Highway 355 (Frederick Avenue) and Maryland State Highway 117 (Diamond Avenue) intersect in Gaithersburg, and Interstate 270 connects the city to the Capital Beltway. Maryland Route 200, also known as the
Intercounty Connector
is also under construction, and will link Gaithersburg to even more of the surrounding area. Gaithersburg is also near the
b station
of the
Washington Metro
and is also serviced by many bus lines. The
CSX Railroad
also runs trains through Gaithersburg, and
Amtrak
uses the same tracks.
Gaithersburg is also home to an exciting and diverse population in a bustling city. Gaithersburg situated close to Washington, DC where residents can travel approximately 30 minutes by car or take the Metro. Gaithersburg is a growing community in Maryland with lots to offer residents, businesses, and visitors.
