The College Park campus of the University of Maryland is the system’s flagship institution. The University has a strong research program and an excellent academic programl. Athletics are also strong at the University, where there many successful teams go by the nickname
“Terrapins”. The University is an integral part of the College Park community and provides many economic and recreational opportunities for the residents of College Park.
In addition to the University of Maryland, College Park also benefits from its proximity to Washington, DC and the many modes of transportation available to its residents. I-95 runs through College Park, providing a major roadway that services the area. I-495 also runs along with I-95 in College Park, and Route 1 runs right through downtown, providing another major roadway with access to College Park. The community also has its own
stop
on the
Washington Metro line, providing easy access to Washington, DC and the surrounding areas.
College Park is also home to the second branch of the
United States National
Archives.
This second branch of the National Archives was opened in 1994 due to space constraints in the old building. Tours of the building are available by contacting your
Congressman.
In recent years College Park has emphasized development and revitalization of the area, and the community hopes to use its location and the presence of the University of Maryland and the National Archives to achieve its goals.
