Alexandria, Virginia
is an independent city with a population of 128, 283 according to the 2000 census. It is located approximately 6 miles south of downtown Washington, DC. The city did not become incorporated until 1779 and in 1791 it was included in the area to be known as the Distroct of Columbia by George Washington ( ). It was later retroceded to Virginia by the US government in 1846, and the city was subsequently re-chartered in 1852. The city’s current mayor is
